Angiogenesis is the creation of new blood vessels, which is a key process in tumor growth. Anti-angiogenesis, then, is a process whereby the blood supply to a tumor is cut off or prevented from forming.  Without a reliable blood supply, tumor cells cannot grow big enough to metastasize.

Can Diet Affect Angiogenesis?

The phytonutrients found in many fruits, vegetables, beans, tea and spices are anti-angiogenetic and can block the stimulation of new blood vessel formation to tumor cells.  A plant-based diet high in whole plant foods may be an effective, long-term strategy for controlling the growth and spread of cancer without harmful side effects.
