Is Proud to Help Launch a New Organization: Balanced

New DVD, New Organization & Last Chance to Register for Research Training

All the evidence in the world is worthless, unless it can be translated into action. I can research until I’m blue in the face (like the time I didn’t screw the blender tight and my blueberry smoothie went WHOOSH), but if there aren’t tools for people to put it into practice, lives will continue to be unnecessarily lost. It’s not enough to just make the science available.

When I was a medical student I wished there was a resource like Commercialism has had such a corrupting influence on nutrition research it was hard to know what to believe. And who had the time to personally dig through the thousands of studies? There was desperate need for a science-based source to cut through all the confusion. And because it didn’t exist, I knew I’d just have to create it myself, and the rest is history. I feel the same way about Balanced.
The second half of How Not to Die was one attempt to try to break down the research into actionable steps. I’m excited to announce that the free Dr. Greger’s Daily Dozen iPhone app should soon be updated with all the same bells and whistles as the Android app. So that’s another small tool. But we don’t have the luxury of changing lives one individual at a time. People are dying now. We need institutional change. The hospitals need to change what they’re serving, schools need to change what they’re serving, restaurants need to change what they’re serving. But there was no organization out there systematically affecting evidence-based nutrition on an institutional level… until now!
One of the most common questions I hear from supporters is some variation of “OK, but what are you going to do about it?” I come out with some new video making a compelling case that large swaths of death and disability are preventable, or easily treatable, and they’re like quick, we have to do something! Meanwhile, I’m at the medical library buried under a mountain of papers working on the next video. To pivot from research to outreach would require a whole new staff, a whole new mission. I realized it would need a whole new organization. And if it didn’t exist, I knew we’d just have to help create it ourselves.
So I’m so proud to announce that has been instrumental in launching Balanced, a new nonprofit organization, run by an amazing educator, Audrey Sanchez. They have my full support. Please check them out at, join their mailing list, follow them on Facebook and on Twitter, support them directly, and strap yourself in for the evidence-based nutrition revolution!

  1. I want to know your opinion about stopping my Crestor. My # have gone from total 242, LDL 174, HDL 31, Triglyceride 195, in January 2016 to May 2017 total 136, LDL 83, HDL 25, Triglycerides 120. I do not want to take Crestor lowest dose any longer. We have been Plant Based since May 2016. I also do not want to be dumb because I have heart disease which I am trying to reverse. Thanks for your feed back!

    1. Great work! The typical ‘heart attack proof’ number cited is below 150 total, which is now you, so congrats! I would suggest finding a doctor who can monitor you in stopping taking the crestor. It’s hard to give advice without knowing your entire medical history, however, it would seem your dietary change is working, and it could be worth at least a trial to come off the medication, and follow up your cholesterol and ensure it doesn’t increase without the crestor.

  2. Just an FYI … I visited the website and read everything I could. I still don’t know what their mission is. Consumer advocate at the corporate level? Consumer educator? Political lobbyist? Further, the chance of someone like me signing up for Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram is zero, so if that it what it takes to know what is going on with them it isn’t going to happen for some of us.

  3. Dr Greger,

I love your videos and books, but is there any way you could produce an idiots guide to being healthy with a 2-4-6-8 week meal plan etc.

I really want to get my life back on track and this would help massivly.

    1. I am getting my life back in track, too. Using the app is so easy. Simple basic foods chosen from the app is the key and simple exercise is the catalyst. I’ve lost over 30 pounds since January just with those two things.

If you want to join with me while I figure it out, I am doing it publically on youtube. My channel is Second Act. I think if you search that with daily dozen it might come up.

    2. If there is a CHIP program running in your area, go! You’ll get all you need and more from it, including meal plans and recipes.
