CT scans confirm that daily vinegar consumption can lead to a significant loss of abdominal fat.

Vinegar has evidently been used as a weight-loss aid for nearly 200 years, but does it work? Well, like hot sauce, it can be a nearly calorie-free way to flavor foods, and there’s all sorts of tasty exotic vinegars out there now, like fig, peach, and pomegranate, to choose from, but the question is: is there something special about vinegar that helps with weight loss? Vinegar is simply a dilute solution of acetic acid, which takes energy for our body to metabolize, activating an enzyme called AMPK, which is like our body’s fuel gauge. If it senses that we’re low, it amps up energy production, and tells the body to stop storing fat and start burning fat. And so, given our obesity epidemic, it is crucial that oral compounds with high bioavailability are developed to safely induce chronic AMPK enzyme activation, which would be potentially beneficial for long-term weight loss. No need to develop such a compound, though, if you can buy it in any grocery store. We know vinegar can activate AMPK in human cells, but is the dose one might get sprinkling it on a salad enough?

If you take endothelial cells—blood-vessel-lining cells—from umbilical cords after babies are born and expose them to various levels of acetate, which is what the acetic acid in vinegar turns into in our stomach, it appears to take a concentration of at least 100 to really get a significant boost in AMPK. So, how much acetate do you get in your bloodstream sprinkling about a tablespoon of vinegar on your salad? You do hit 100, but only for about 15 minutes. And even at that concentration, 10 or 20 minutes exposure doesn’t seem to do much. Now granted, this is in a petri dish, but we didn’t have any clinical studies until…we did!

A double blind trial investigating the effects of vinegar intake on the reduction of body fat in overweight men and women. They call them obese, but they were actually slimmer than your average American. In Japan, they call anything over a BMI of 25 obese, whereas the average American adult is about 28.6. But anyway, they took about 150 overweight individuals, and randomly split them up into one of three groups, a high dose vinegar group, where they drank a beverage containing two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar a day, a low dose group, where they drank a beverage containing only one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar a day, and a placebo control group where they had them drink an acidic beverage they developed to taste the same as the vinegar drink but using a different kind of acid; so, there was no acetic acid.

No other changes in their diet or exercise—in fact, they monitored their diets and gave them all pedometers so they could make sure that the only significant difference between the three groups was the amount of vinegar they were getting every day. This is where they started out, and within just one month, statistically significant drops in weight in both vinegar groups compared to placebo, with high dose doing better than low dose, which just got better month after month. In fact, by month three, the do-nothing placebo group actually gained weight, as overweight people tend to do, whereas the vinegar groups significantly dropped their weight. Was the weight loss actually significant or just statistically significant? Well, that’s for you to decide. This is in kilograms; so, compared to placebo, the two tablespoons of vinegar a day group dropped five pounds by the end of the 12 weeks. That may not sound like a lot, but they got that for just pennies a day without removing anything from their diet.

And they got slimmer, up to nearly an inch off their waist, suggesting they were losing abdominal fat, but the researchers went the extra mile and put it to the test. They put the research subjects through abdominal CT scans to actually directly measure the amount of fat before and after in their bodies. They measured the amount of superficial fat, visceral fat, and total body fat. Superficial fat is the fat under your skin that makes for flabby arms and contributes to cellulite, but visceral fat is the killer—that’s the fat, shown here in white, building up around your internal organs that bulges out the belly. And that’s the kind of fat the placebo group was putting on when they were gaining weight. Not good. But both the low dose and high dose vinegar groups were able to remove about a square inch of visceral fat off that CT scan slice.

Now, like any weight loss strategy, it only works if you do it. A month after they stopped the vinegar, the weight crept right back, but that’s just additional evidence that the vinegar was working, but how?

A group of researchers in the UK suggested an explanation: vinegar beverages are gross.  They made a so-called palatable beverage by mixing a fruity syrup and vinegar in water and then went out of their way to make a really nasty, unpalatable vinegar beverage.  White wine vinegar was used in both the palatable and the nasty beverage. The nasty beverage was so unpleasant that the study subjects actually felt nauseous after drinking it; so, they ate less of the meal the researchers gave them with the beverage.  So, there you go—vinegar helps with both appetite control and food intake, though these effects are largely due to the fruity vinegar concoctions invoking feelings of nausea. So, is that what was going on here? Were the vinegar groups just eating less? No, the vinegar groups were eating about the same compared to placebo. Same diet, more weight loss, thanks, perhaps, to the acetic acid’s impact on AMPK.

Now, the CT scans make this a very expensive study; so, I was not surprised it was funded by a company that sells vinegars, which is good, since otherwise we wouldn’t have these amazing data, but is also bad because it always leaves you wondering if the funding source somehow manipulated the results. But the nice thing about companies funding studies about healthy foods, whether it’s some kiwifruit company, or the National Watermelon Promotion Board—watermelon.org, check it out—is that what’s the worst that can happen? Here, for example, even if the findings turned out to be bogus, worst comes to worst, your salad would just be tastier.

Type “vinegar” into PubMed, the search engine comprising more than 27 million citations for biomedical literature, and 40,000 studies pop up. It took me a while to take it all in, but I’m so glad I did, as it’s something that has caused a shift in my own diet. I now try to add various vinegars every day.

  1. I don’t know about ACV for weight loss, as I’ve never had a weight problem. But I do put some ACV on my raw salad at dinner time (and a little lemon juice).

    After I read Dr. Jarvis’s book published some years ago, I’ve been taking a bottle of (filtered) water with a coupla teaspoons of ACV added to restaurants, just in case (hey, it can’t hurt!). In his book, Dr. J. tells about the married couple who went to an outdoor potluck in their neighborhood. The wife took the bottle of water/ACV concoction and sipped it throughout the meal She did not get sick from food poisoning, whereas the husband and others in the group did.

    (I also tell restaurant people not to bring me any water with ice. Restaurant ice gets bad press.)

    1. YR, These sound like some good tips. Thanks for sharing.

      I just read where if you happen to get exposed to the coronavirus through the mouth, drinking plenty of water throughout the day may help wash the virus down into the stomach where it is killed by stomach acid. I would assume your ACV/water drink would do the same or work even better.

        1. I can only find unsubstantiated information suggesting the use of vinegar to treat fatty liver. None that suggest vinegar causes fatty liver disease. Perhaps you confused the two. Do you have a link to anything credible suggesting such a health hazard resulting from vinegar consumption?

          The tooth enamel concern appears real but can be managed by drinking water after acidic food or beverage intake.

          I have witnessed people with acid reflux recoil from one vinegar citing inevitable stomach upset but enjoying another vinegar with the same 5% acidity because there was more of a wine taste. That’s anecdotal but so is the idea that acidic foods causes stomach upset.

          1. Have you ever heard that alcohol gave people liver problems? Vinegar is made from alcohol and is more concentrated, so affects the liver even more. There is a nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, so there must be an alcoholic fatty liver disease.

            1. Alcohol is a poison.

              Apple cider vinegar is made from apples.  What little alcohol results from the fermentation process is removed or evaporated. None left.  Nothing looking or acting like alcohol remaining.

              There have been many studies about the effectiveness of apple cider vinegar for detoxifying the liver, with no negative effects that I’ve seen reported.

              It’s good for you.  Even if you don’t like it.  :-)

                I have been sterilzinv everything in my Wabi Baby and I am in love with it. It was expensive but I put so many things in it already.

                I love UV sterilizers!

                Now, onto vinegar research.

          2. My Dr. recommended using cider vinegar for my acid reflux & sour stomach to try to get off of my acid reflux pills that are suppose to have side effects.

          Just for information, stomach acid is already very strong, often stronger than battery acid.  And that’s a very good thing.  It’s what allows your digestive system to break down your food so it can nourish you.  You can’t live and stay healthy without strong stomach acid.

          Vinegar  is a much weaker acid, on par with things like lemonade.  Yes, vinegar, lemonade and soda pop can etch your teeth, but it’s a slow process.  Rinse your mouth with fresh water afterwards to keep your teeth happy.  (Rinsing your mouth with water is good to do after a meal too.)

          I see quite a few citations that vinegar helps to detoxify the liver.  ‘The acid in ACV can also bind to toxins which can assist in removing toxins from the body.’  It is also said to prevent kidney stones, though drinking plenty of water works too.

            1. Marcy, people have been using ACV for generations with no ill effects. The stomach has a very low PH, usually around 2. You wouldn’t want to drink vinegar straight, but diluted or mixed with food it isn’t a problem.
              Where are you getting your information?

          1. For anyone concerned with teeth erosion, I drink my ACV mixed into a glass of water, through a straw. That way, straight down my throat with less contact around teeth

            1. Lots of things we drink are just as bad at etching your teeth as apple cider vinegar.  It’s not a very fast process.

              Simply rinsing your mouth with water afterwards is usually fine.

              This applies to lemonade, soda pop and others.

        3. Marcy, no it doesn’t… Where is your evidence. Yes, if you drink mounds of pure vinegar, I’m sure it will irritate the stomach among other things and if you swish your mouth with vinegar water, it’s definitely not going to be good for the enable. Diluted normal amounts of vinegar are not going to do any of those things that you just randomly claimed.

    2. We carried AVC/honey in a bottle on all hikes and trips in the Philippines where most water has amoeba or even typhoid. We filled our water bottles with local water and mixed some into every bottle. We stayed healthy.

    3. YR, I have a copy of the 1958 edition of Dr. Jarvis book. I found it at a library book sale a couple of years ago. (Our library has a fill a bag with books for 1$ sale once a year.)
      He says the same thing that this study does. Also said ACV helps arthritis, and just about everything else. :)
      Dr. Jarvis recommended eating mostly vegetables, some fruits, oatmeal, bread made from cornmeal or rye, seaweed, and some fish. He disapproved of a high protein diet, especially animal protein.
      All this from observing the dietary habits of healthy people.

      1. Marilyn, I too had a copy of the Dr. J. book. With all my moves, I must have lost it. He observed a lot of things just by watching animals and by Mother Nature herself.

    1. Yes! Extruded food is THE BEST! Extruded food is processed in similar manner to its expulsion from the body after intake ,so it causes less problems because the body doesn’t have to change it as much.

      In defense of the product you are shilling, I’ve seen worse.

      1. Not me although bidet showers (hand-held bidet sprayers) are very common here in the Philippines, probably because of the resultant savings in toilet paper.

          I read the link and its comments. Most of the comments for bidet use are positive. Drawbacks seem to be high pressured and hot water injuries. I use a plastic quart coffee can with warm water in combination with a regular toilet with the seat up. 1. Very clean result, 2. Keeps paper out of the septic tank, 3. Don’t have paper expense, 4. No paper waste.

            It appears though that you would need to use pressure with both the paper and water methods to achieve effective cleaning.

              1. It’s not necessarily originally an Eastern method. It just fell out of use in the West and China much earlier than in the Middle East

    1. Vinegar has no fiber. It doesn’t fit into a WPFD. We could lose weight by eating nothing but low calorie foods made from chemicals too, but we wouldn’t be healthier for it.

        People do tend to add things like vinegar to things like salad or bean dishes for flavor. WFPB can have sauces and things, too.

        The thing is, I went WFPB and got off the junk food and the dairy and the oil and slowly processed food and I didn’t lose weight. I am currently eating my salads with a mixture of vinegar and salad dressing.

        When I look at mechanisms, this decreases visceral fat by regulating AMPK. AMPK is involved with both the metabolism and circadian rhythms and it is so very likely that my messed up circadian rhythms and messed up metabolism are why WFPB didn’t work.

        Anyway, I am not sure yet whether the Apple Cider vinegar will help Whole Food Plant-Based work in my weight loss project, but Dr. Greger deserves so much more respect and if he is pointing to things that work, it is quite possible that it may help someone and just might be the difference-maker.

          Deb, do you even need the salad dressing (with all those questionable ingredients!) at all? For me, ACV, a coupla small slabs of avocado and a little lemon juice make a delicious topping for a raw salad.

          You didn’t say how long you’ve been on a WFPB diet.  Losing weight takes time.  And some WFPB is better than others.

          You’re certainly on the right path.  WFPB will help you restart your metabolism.  Exercise is important too.  A half-hour daily walk will make a new person out of you.  Making sure you get all your vitamins and minerals shouldn’t be overlooked either.

          Even WFPB isn’t enough today.  Our ‘good food’ has less nutrients than it used to.  Pollution, factory farming and climate change are reducing nutrients from our WFPB!  Greater CO2 in the atmosphere makes plants grow faster but with fewer vitamins and minerals.  Take a good vitamin/mineral supplement every day.  This will help you lose weight too!  The energy factories in all your cells can’t work right without all the necessary vitamins and minerals.  So they can’t burn calories or help you be active and alert.

          Your body makes billions of new cells every day.  If the building blocks aren’t there then those cells won’t work very well.  It takes time to replace enough old cells to make a difference.

          1. Yes, he is a very smart man. He bought his doctorate online from a well-known diploma mill (non-accredited of course) and now goes around calling himself Dr Andrew Saul. Much cheaper and easier than getting one the traditional way.

            I bought Saul’s book and subscribed to his orthomolecular newsletter for years until I realised that it was all based on highly dubious studies and misrepresentations of the science. As WC Fields once said “You can fool some of the people some of the time — and that’s enough to make a decent living.”

He’s a well respected nutritionist of 40 some years, with long lists of successes in improving the health of thousands of his clients, your absurd and reprehensible character assassination not withstanding.  He has a very long list of respected doctors, MDs and other professionals that vouch for him constantly and peer-review his work.

              He trades in knowledge backed by copious research from the literature included with most of his articles and presentations. His work is hardly his own, but a collection of the current best minds of science.  Take his recommendations apart and show me the flaws of their component parts.

              There are none.

              What he preaches works and works very well, as so many others will attest.  I understand that folks like him are under fire from drug company trolls, but that’s life.

                Another true believer of some alternative health guru with a phony ‘doctorate’ to impress the gullible, it appears. And he must be right because he is allegedly under fire from drug companies? The logic of that particular argument escapes me but yeah right.

  2. Vinegar beverages are not gross. See shrub: a cocktail or soft drink first made popular during America’s colonial era, made by mixing a vinegared syrup with spirits, water, or carbonated water. The serving of vinegar-based shrub drinks became popular again in 2011 in American restaurants and bars. The acidity of the shrub makes it well suited as an apéritif or used as an alternative to bitters in cocktails. Making your own shrubs is very easy and the flavor possibilities are endless. The process is similar to making simple syrup or homemade infusions .

  3. On a different note (sorry RB), there was a question and discussion about Restless Legs Syndrome a few weeks ago in the forum. Though I use magnesium, RLS persisted recently, until now! I have been taking an iron supplement for anemia on the advice of my doc, and noticed I no longer suffer RLS. Webmd has anemia down as one potential cause.

      Have you picked up on anything with the craze for electro-stimulation for various ailments? Seems like I had something like that done over 40 years ago for a back injury–at a chiropractic. Kind of felt weird. My back eventually got better, on its own probably.

  4. I have a friend who had a thyroidectomy (papillary thyroid cancer). She has adapted a plant based diet, but we are concerned about keep her system alkaline. Is APV wise in her case?

      ‘there’s no way the foods you eat can alter the pH level of your blood. The body’s pH is a very tightly regulated system.         Mostly, I was reading about coronavirus being inactivated at 8 pH and I got rid of my coffee and I bought Starkey water because it has a pH of nearly 10. I already do eat a highly alkaline diet, but I had the thought that I wonder if ditching the coffee for a few days and drinking something highly alkaline will help.

        I think that it worked faster than anything I have ever tried in my whole life.

        Not saying that I had coronavirus. I had what felt like bad strep throat and when I did the gargling salt water and saline nasal irrigation, that worked pretty well, but when I added in the getting rid of the coffee and chugging high alkaline water, it was amazing.

        Not sure if it was a placebo effect but it was so amazing that I could swallow and not be in pain and I was happy.

        I just had heard what you posted and am not sure if drinking alkaline water has any scientific basis at all.

          1. Alkaline water is fairly scamish.  You can achieve the same results with a quarter or half teaspoon of baking soda in a tall glass of water.  There are lots of things this can help with. Many older folks, especially meat eaters tend to have a somewhat acidic system which causes more inflammation among other problems.  There have been a number of suggestions that these pH raising minerals can help with disease, even cancer, since disease tends to flourish in an acidic environment.

            A dose of baking soda daily can certainly help.  My elderly mother finds that it reduces her arthritis pain somewhat.

            One of the problems with alkaline water, besides the ridiculous cost, is that it’s water.  People tend to drink it like water and drink too much.  I’ve had friends get sick on it.  Not good. Worse, it’s not well known that it’s best not to consume either of these with meals.  They tend to interfere with digestion and nutrient absorption.  Between meals is best.

            In my reading of the literature I haven’t found any advantage to alkaline water over baking soda other than profits to the seller.

    1. Mohamed, I wonder what you are eating. If you include Dr. Greger’s daily dozen in your diet you should see an improvement in your energy level.

      Make sure you eat enough calories.

      What you eat matters, but also how much you eat and make sure it isn’t refined carbs and vegan junk food.

    3. It very well could be the cleansing effect. If you are eating plenty of fresh veggies along with a variety of whole plant foods, your body could be releasing the toxins into the blood for disposal. Just drink a lot of water to help it flush things out. If you will hang in there, you will soon feel a lot better. Meat and eggs have a stimulating effect. If your body is addicted to that stimulus, water can help that too.

            My other co-worker has a college-age daughter who is now home for a month and he suddenly has to feed her the very week there is no food in any of the grocery stores nearby. That has become a very big problem.

        Mentally, I buy into the steam and UV light. I know that Dr. Annie showed me the Norwex cloths being ridiculously germy after a few days and not self-disinfecting at all and she is such a germaphobe that if her microfiber cloths got that germy after just wiping a counter which didn’t have chicken or anything at all, I am doing a multiple-phase process right now.

        I was wanting to just do water-only cleaning, but I have a cousin who has a serious respiratory infection right now and he might not live and I don’t want to be the one to spread anything at all.

  10. In the beginning of the video, Dr. Greger mentions hot sauce as something we can use to flavor our food. However, most/many hot sauces are made with fermented peppers. I thought fermented foods were bad for you. Dr. Greger previously suggested that consumption of fermented foods could be the cause of the increased stomach cancers in Korea (I assume he meant things like Kimchi). So, is hot sauce okay to consume on a regular basis? i.e. Frank’s or Tobasco?

    1. The Koreans eat kimchi in quantities difficult for the minds of others to fathom. Koreans also consume more salt than others with the Japanese not far behind. So the suggestion of Dr. Greger’s video…and it was just a suggestion…was that maybe the combined action of very high kimchi and salt ingestion might contribute to stomach cancer in Korea.

      Good luck eating Tobasco in amounts similar to Korean kimchi consumption. A habit of eating anything in huge amounts on a daily basis should be subject to critical evaluation. I wouldn’t worry about spicing up some chili.

        Vitamin C is cheap, extremely safe and surprisingly effective. So much so that drug company trolls seem to be concerned about its wider use.

        I can personally attest that C is wonderfully effective against flu.  Take enough to suppress your symptoms and wonder if you ever had it.  Just don’t stop taking it for a week or so, or the flu symptoms will come back.

        Vitamin C is good for a long list of things, but it requires larger doses.

        Most importantly the emerging findings are that it doesn’t take much to keep you from dying from Coronavirus.

            You get everything you need in abundance following a WFPB diet incorporating the right foods e.g not just living off of ice berg lettuce.
            Supplements are unnatural and among a long list of dangers from them—many of which can be found on this site—while I’m not aware of studies on this, I imagine it can throw things out of balance. For example, our bodies are intelligent and foods are complex and we absorb everything the way we’re meant to from whole plant foods (we even have special receptors in our bodies for them!). But when you have mass doses of a pure isolated nutrient, a lot of nutrients share the same pathways so I can’t see how among other things, that doesn’t interfere with balanced nutrition.

            Anyways, there are excellent videos and data presented on this site about supplements. Some may be beneficial to some not eating a proper diet such as a b complex for the brain (getting them from food is better) or magnesium in those eating a SAD who tend to be dangerously deficient (and although improved, the study showed they were still deficient after supplementing) and we all know B12 is necessary and good for us whereas others can be extremely dangerous and ineffective such as calcium. Zinc, copper, and iron supplementation can be dangerous as well. Biotin supplementation may cause B5 (I believe it was) deficiency as they share the same pathway and supplements contain such high amounts that they drown it out—this was a theory as to why many report acne when taking a biotin supplement. And that’s assuming you’re getting what’s on the label in the first place. And there’s so much more that could be said. I would search “supplements” on this site.

            Much better to get real nutrition through real means and since we can’t safely eat dirt or drink untreated water, take B12. But indeed the propaganda that food is deficient in nutrients is a fallacy.

            1. Dr. Greger is a wonderful resource, but he’s not the only one out there.  I’m posting this to be helpful.  This is not a religion and I’m not selling anything.  Just providing sources for more study for those that care.

              Since I became aware of these problems I’ve been carefully selecting and taking a few key supplements, especially more vitamins, and it’s really changed my health, which was already good, thanks to Dr. Greger and others.  I have much more energy, get sick much less often, and things like my arthritis have gone away.

              WFPB is very important.  But it’s not enough.  Although, it is important to know that green smoothies make your *WFPB 3 times as  absorb-able*.  So a smoothie in the morning is especially helpful.

                Dr. Greger has presented the real data on that claim and put it into a real and understandable perspective… in order to get the same amount of nutrition that we would have some great many years ago, for example, we would need to eat…brace yourself….one extra grape.                 I’m glad you’re doing well but anecdotes aren’t science. What’s funny to me is I’ve actually improved my health and feel much better since getting OFF supplements as when I first went WFPB, I was convinced of all the nonsense on supplements but after learning the science and reality of it all, I saved lots of money and felt SO much better relying on food only for nutrition with the exception of B12 and vitamin D in the winter. No more constant bright yellow pee, either! And I mean constant.                 But I’ve always heard that taking a supplement with 500 mg. of C can cause diarrhea, and I sure do like to avoid that! Lately, I’ve been scarfing down half or a whole orange or more for additional C. I figure it can’t hurt!

  16. Excellent video S! I enjoy all of them from that era. That smoothie, and the other smoothie recipes from Dr Greger’s videos would make a great kid’s breakfast. Also wonderful for older folks.

    On another note, I don’t know who exactly is buying all the beans the past week, but I don’t think we suddenly had a mass conversion of omnivors to vegans! (it would be nice if we did though). I may be doing a few water fasts in upcoming months by necessity!

                1. Well I imagine the doughnuts would cause her to frequent the bathroom less often and even the wine… alcohol and dehydration and that. Perhaps more strategic than we realize, albeit unhealthy.

            2. Good for her (the woman you quoted). The problem is people are being forced to stock up a bit because of all the hoarders. It’s hard to even get what you need. And what about all the elderly or single mothers, etc. who can’t afford to go out and buy more than their budget allows? People are so thoughtless and greedy and irrational. If they’re that worried, just wear a mask and gloves and stop being greedy!

              1. S, it’s really sad. Many people here have problems trying to get enough food to eat in any given month, not just lately. The food banks and kitchens have huge lineups… not sure what they will do about that. I bought some extra canned tomatoes, beans, rice and oats because if the virus comes here I could be stuck in the house for quite a while. I can’t take a chance on catching it. When I was sick earlier this year I didn’t feel like eating anyway.

                1. Well I hope it doesn’t, Barb. Thank God they found a treatment for it but it will take a bit. It’s around here but I don’t know anyone with it and I feel pretty confident in my diet protecting me while also taking reasonable precaution. Hope it passes soon, though.
                  I haven’t been following it too much, but I have to say that I’m pleased at the president’s actions over it. He put out a statement recently, too, asking people to understand there’s enough resources for everyone and not to panic, so to please consider others who truly might need something like toilet paper, etc.

        All the dried and canned and boxed beans were gone. There were some processed beans, but no no-oil hummus either.

        No lentils or quinoa, no tomato paste or apple cider vinegar.

        Very few frozen vegetables.

        Every WFPB thing I looked for was low, except for fresh produce and I have lots and lots of oranges.

        I really felt like everybody must have read Dr. Greger’s book.

        But my brother saying there was no meat or eggs or cheese or milk, and the radio announcer saying, no junk food and some alcohol shortages, some people might have bought beans because of not being able to find hamburger or chicken.

        Speaking of chicken, I want to HIGHLY recommend Dr. Greger’s Bird Flu book.

        Free here and I am making sure it was Dr. Greger who put it up and meant for people to read it for free by posting it here. If it is behind Dr. Greger’s back, I had better read faster before he takes it down. It is packed full of information. It is something that I read back when Coronavirus was just a glint in people’s eyes, but now I am doing a closer read, but it is so well-written that I can learn so much and come away with so much understanding. Very useful right now.

        The first section is the gory reality of 1918, but the chapters after that were soooooo well-written, Simple and clear and straightforward. I have been trying to learn about the immune system for the past year and I read Dr. Greger’s explanation of what the letters H1N1 mean even just that and I understand it fully. I might have to look up whether we are at H2N2 or H3N3 but I suddenly know that there is a system.

I just had the most horrifying conversation about the coronavirus by someone who ridiculously has a master’s degree in biology and who just said sentence after sentence after sentence that demonstrated less science background than I have and I am not kidding. I wanted to ask the person, “Are you like the ‘Catch Me if You Can’ person? Did you fake the classes and just live off of the student loans? I am so traumatized now. The person is married to someone close to me and I am not going to say any other sentences, but they gave a conspiracy theory version of it and also gave 100% wrong information on how it spreads and how long it stays in the air and on surfaces and what kills it and every single detail out of their mouth was wrong and, to be honest, I have had the “Catch Me if You Can” thought before but they definitely did do a double masters degree and one was in biology. I am so traumatized.

    Back to the Bird Flu book.

    1. There are many sub-specialties in biology.  And a masters usually suggests specialization.

      A biology masters could easily have wandered far away from anything useful for understanding Coronavirus.

    2. Sorry for sharing that. It is just that the person used the internet in a way that tells me that they are genuinely a con artist or really got passed through college the way people get passed through grade school. I have another friend who was passed through a master’s degree like that and that person really did attend. I just know that they went to the most conspiracy-oriented site possible and I don’t even get offered those sites and didn’t know what was out there.

      My science music videos and the Amoeba sisters and Dr. Greger just protected me from such disinformation. Yikes.

      1. Thanks for sharing about the book, Deb! Yeah the internet is a scary place and too many people are all too eager with spreading or even creating misinformation. The public needs to wise up, but honestly in my experience, frustratingly enough, authentic learning seems to be looked at as a burden to even intelligent people. Like they’re so contented with the idea that google and every blog on it can give them instant “knowledge” that questioning that system is deemed offensive.

        Then people seem to get offended in finding out they’re wrong or were mislead. This baffles me because I love finding out the truth and simply wanting to be preemptively right for the sake of it, is the enemy of learning. Learning is one of the greatest things. Though in fairness, I do remember how uncomfortable it was each time I found out I was completely mislead about something e.g “humane farming” and that it even could exist and nutritional science. But I never found denial a solution to that discomfort.

        1. I feel so bad for people who have health issues.

          My cousin is Diabetic and can’t mess around with food shortages.

          Plus, his doctor told him straight out that he will die if he gets this. The doctor told him that he is so immunocompromised and already has such respiratory problems going on that he would not survive.

          I feel afraid even of bringing things to him. If I bring him things, I am going to be bringing my Wabi Baby with me. It is light weight enough that I probably could bring it and disinfect everything on the other end.

          1. Deb, maybe the best thing would be to not visit your cousin til this virus has passed us by? I was in a frail situation many years ago when h1n1 came through. They told me I wouldn’t survive. I stayed home and didn’t have company. You have a busy life with work, employees shopping. That’s very risky for your cousin.

    2. That is so sad, Deb. Just horrible. Thankfully I’m healthy, but I don’t know what to do without produce… I live off of it. It’s so stupid to hoard—it goes bad!!!! Those hoarders probably ate a vegetable prior. At Trader Joe’s they said at this point, they aren’t able to order more stocks and instead, due to supplies, manufacturers are only able to send what they’re capable of producing. All this over stupidity and greed.

      1. After my comment, I have to say, some people are really nice, though. I know someone who recently ran into a woman at a store and there were two rolls of toilet paper left which the woman grabbed but then asked the person I know if they wanted one. The person I know said thanks but that they have a lot of tissue instead right now so they didn’t need it. The woman said that was a good idea and she had a lot of tissues too but didn’t think of that and since she also had a couple rolls of toilet paper at home, she decided to put the two rolls back on the shelf for someone who might really need it.

        I have minimal faith in humanity more often than not, when people are so thoughtful like that it’s so heart warming and inspiring and it really makes you realize there are a lot of good people out there and a lot of goodness in people still.

    1. Lynn, Dr. Greger actually mentions ACV supplements in one of his ACV videos. There are two major concerns in regards to taking it in supplement form:

      1) Due to pathetically poor regulations for supplements, you may be getting much less or much more than what is on the label, or even none at all.

      2) If the pill gets stuck in the esophagus—which can be a very common thing with pills—it can severely injure you. I believe this has happened from the supplement, but I’d have to go back and watch the video again to say in total certainty.

(Certainly possible that reports of fakes come from rumors from competing companies.  Maybe I’m just sensitized to fakes since so much of what the president has been reporting has proven false. )   :-(

      Seems a little odd that this one uses a blood sample, since all the others in the news use a nose swab.

    2. Mad dash is on for every single thing.

      Earlier today, they were talking about someone catching on fire from homemade hand sanitizer and I had just read that in Dr Greger’s Bird Flu book.

      Gotta let your hands dry before touching things.

      The pharmacies are being commissioned to make their own as a way to deal with the shortage.

      I think I heard my relative gasp that the Apple store has already closed in America and didn’t re-open in China until now.

  18. People are more afraid of what is going to happen to the economy than the virus itself and that is what is driving the panic.

    The woman who bought 12 years worth of toilet paper goes back to my litmus test.

    What emotionally would you panic shop for?

    Is it cleaning supplies? Hand sanitizer?

    Are you like me and bought a steam cleaner and UV system?

    And also like me and have a system if hand sanitizers, wipes and sprays at work, even though you have been trying to go water only?

    Or is it a Whole Food Plant-Based food shortage that might cause you to suddenly walk swiftly through a store or stand in an hour long line?

    We talked about a relative who passed away when he turned 40. He was a prepper. He would have been over-prepared for this but he wasn’t prepared for the rest of his life.

  19. I had a school teacher talk against the elbow bump phenomenon today and I agree with her:

    She said, “I teach every kid in my class to cough and sneeze into their elbow area and I don’t want them seeing that area as a way to interact. It is where the germs go to keep them off of their hands.”

  20. I had thought about the same thing and what occurred to me the most is that we will be heading for short-sleeve weather for young people very soon and elbow bumping was a bad idea.

  21. Dr. John Campbell said that the data looks so far that if people take steps to reduce the fever, it is increasing the death rate in places where the death rate is higher. He is going to do a video on it tomorrow.

Talked with my relatives today and when we talked about the coronavirus symptom, 5 of them said, “We had the exact same dry cough and fever at Christmas through New Years.” I do know that they were sick then, but they said, “It was a dry cough back then, not a productive cough.” They all think they already have had it.

    I have said that they were sick a few times this year, but the “dry cough” was what they had at Christmas through the New Year.

    I wonder if it spread earlier or if something else has the exact same symptoms. (Which is what my brother said.)

    1. A dry cough could be symptomatic of anything from whooping cough to bronchitis and viral pneumonia. Or it could just be a ‘normal’ respiratory infection.
