The Benefits and Dangers of Chlorella
I explain why I no longer consume chlorella.
Topic summary contributed by volunteer(s): Randy
Kidney disease ranks as the ninth leading cause of death in the U.S. What may be some foods to avoid in order to keep our kidneys healthy? Due to toxic metal contamination, NeuG5c, alpha-gal, and advanced glycation end products (AGEs), meat (including poultry and processed meat), sugar, and high-fat meals should be avoided to maintain kidney health. Similarly, intake of betel nuts or star fruit can potentially shut down the kidneys, and the safety of chamomile tea for those with kidney disease has not yet been established. High-temperature cooking may create kidney cancer causing carcinogens.
Staying well hydrated, consuming phytates, which are in beans, nuts, seeds, and grains, and plant-based diets in general may help reduce kidney stone risk. Those with certain kidney stones should be cautious about nutritional yeast, turmeric, and beets. To eliminate uric acid kidney stones, drinking at least ten cups of water per day and reducing animal protein and salt intake may do the trick.
Overall, plant-based diets appear to boost kidney health. Plant-based, fiber-rich diets may protect against kidney and other cancers, reduce the risk of childhood prediabetes (which can lead to kidney damage) and diabetes, the top cause of kidney failure. No surprise, then, that plant-based diets can be used to both help prevent and treat kidney failure.

A misinterpretation of lab tests may explain concerns over kidney safety with creatine supplementation.
What are the three reasons plant protein is preferable to animal protein for kidney protection?
I share a touching story of the power of plant-based eating for chronic kidney failure.
Diet appears to mediate the majority of the racial health gap.
How might we cut the risk of dialysis and death in half?
Healthy kidneys are required for potassium excretion. If you aren’t sure if you’re at risk, ask your doctor about getting your kidney function tested.
Is potassium chloride win-win by decreasing sodium intake and increasing potassium intake?
A staggering 99.99 percent of Americans fail to get the minimum recommended potassium intake (despite it being perhaps only half of our natural intake) and stay below the recommended sodium intake (even though it may be twice our natural intake).
If the microbiome of those eating plant-based diets protects against the toxic effects of TMAO, what about swapping gut flora?
The overall cost-benefit ratio for mycotoxins depends on which food is contaminated.
Most food crops are contaminated with fungal mycotoxins, but some foods are worse than others.
Chlorohydrin contaminates hydrolyzed vegetable protein products and refined oils.
How can you calculate your own personal heart disease risk and use it to determine if you should start on a cholesterol-lowering statin drug?
What are the effects of weight loss on natural killer cell function, our first line of immune defense against cancer, as well as kidney function and fatty liver disease?
Various fasting regimens have been attempted for inflammatory autoimmune diseases such as lupus, ankylosing spondylitis, chronic urticaria, mixed connective-tissue disease, glomerulonephritis, and multiple sclerosis, as well as osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia.
Natural approaches to lowering high blood pressure can work better than drugs because you’re treating the underlying cause, and can end up having only good side effects.
Only 2 out of 12 supplement companies were found to have products that were even accurately labeled.
Star fruit contains a neurotoxin known as caramboxin that can cause irreversible brain damage at high enough doses.
Keto diets put to the test for diabetes reversal.
Given their oxalate content, how much is too much spinach, chard, beet greens, chaga mushroom powder, almonds, cashews, star fruit, and instant tea?
Even though dietary oxalates may have a limited effect on kidney stone risk in most people, there are some predisposing factors that can put anyone at risk.

There have been at least eight randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials of ginger for pain.
A half-teaspoon a day of brewer’s yeast is put to the test in a randomized, double-blind, controlled clinical trial.
Chicken, fish, and egg powder in processed foods present greater risk from cholesterol oxidation byproducts, but there are things you can do to reduce exposure.
Coconut water is tested head-to-head against plain water and sports drinks in athletes.
Let’s review lead from occupational exposures, shooting ranges, eggs, and bone broth.
Should we be concerned about high-choline plant foods, such as broccoli, producing the same toxic TMAO that results from eating high-choline animal foods, such as eggs?
A daily half-cup of cooked rice may carry a hundred times the acceptable cancer risk of arsenic. What about seaweed from the coast of Maine?
One way a diet rich in animal-sourced foods like meat, eggs, and cheese may contribute to heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, and death is through the production of toxin called TMAO.
